rear panel replacement?

Hi all,

In continuing to plan my chrome-bumper conversion...

- has anyone replaced their rear valence / panel, and documented it?

- would the Moss panel, along with the outer rear fender patches, form the complete 'cone' under the taillight?

Any & all info would be welcome. Front fenders already sourced, bumpers too... Help me to get rid of these horrible rubber bumpers!

I've got to replace under both tail lights and behind LR Tire. Trying to make a decision on MOSS Patch Panel or cutting up a 63-67 rear clip in reasonably good shape that I can get as a freebie. Biggest issue is getting rear clip home in the back of the Suburban and getting it unloaded. I also have a problem with rust under the chrome cockpit surrond. Treated 5 years ago but that may need to be totally cut out and replaced. Any thoughts on that as well

I ran across these pics on the net a while ago. It's at a shop in Jersey. Hope they can help.

An MGB conversion is a little simpler than a Midget.

Hi Donn,

Thanks for that! It's a B though, correct? Looks like they have a cutout all the way across, even for the chrome-bumper cars.

With the Midgets, there's a minor difference in the rear panel that runs under the bootlid (RB cars have flat square areas to which the bumper mounts, and no taper out under the taillights) and different rear quarters (again, no taper.)

Paging JP!

Parts #40 and 43 are what I'm considering.

40 is the inner closing panel. I think you want 34 instead.

I don't think they look that bad. My first car ('78 toyota celica) had rubber bumpers. I think they look best on black midgets.

Since Midgets are relatively cheap and plentiful, most people just buy ones with chrome bumpers if that is what they prefer.

Hey Duncan, I did half of that conversion but I think you are correct in saying those two panel should complete it. My 75 was rearended once and the repair was shaddy so I put an early valance in there. Got it from VB was a heritage part and fit perfectly. I have Fiberglass fenders to complete the radius so no help from me with the outer panels. While you have the new valance its also a good time to add the super cool recessed plate effect.

Wow Scott,

That looks great! I think that by next winter, if the VW is out of the garage, it might be time for a little panel work on the MG.

Trevor, up here in the rust belt anyway, pretty much all of the Midgets, and certainly the chrome-bumper ones, have either undergone extensive restoration, or need it! I'd hate to sell my rust-free California example, only to buy someone else's A-pillar rust. As you can see from my VW thread, I'm not a complete stranger to panel replacement these days, so I'm pondering the idea of sticking in a rear slam panel and a couple of little patches, and having a 1500-engined chrome bumper car!
