Radiator for 1275 in Bugeye

Hey All, Another question. I have the flywheel and manifold issues covered.Now What do I do for a Radiator? It looks like the 948 thermostat housing could be turned and a hose adapted to fit on the top. Can this be done?. If not, would a 1275 cross flow radiator and shrowd fit in the bugeye opening? I have a recored 948 radiator and the 948 thermostat housing. Chris gave me a link from last month where a similar question was asked. I'm sure some one else has a 1275 in a Bugeye and has solved this problem. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Use the BE radiator and housing and the 1275 hoses and you will be fine.

What thermostat housing would I use? The 1275 hose conection points to the left side of the car at about a 3 o'clock position while the 948 thermostat housing has the top hose conection pointing toward the left at about a 8 o'clock position. Again, I'm not sure if the thermostat housings will interchange.

I have one housing on my 948 but It doesn't want to come off. I don't want to damage it trying to pry it off. I also have one someplace up in the attic over the garage. As of now my garage is cluttered with boxes used to store Christmas decorations plus It's winter here in Ohio. I'll wait till I get the decorations put away and can get to my workbench again. I thought (memory only!!) that it was an 1100 housing (or very early 1275 housing) that was used on a 1275 to hook to a downflow radiator.

The 948 housing will work on the 1275. You'll love the 1275 in your bugeye. Word of caution, as you enjoy the 1275 you'll start thinking 5 speed, 3.9 rear end, SC,.... I'm not sure it ends.

What did you finally do on the thermostat housing? I am in the final stages of my 948/smoothcase to 1275/ 5-speed conversion. the 1275 has an engine ID tag that starts with "12V...". The 948 thermostat housing studs are oriented differently than the 1275 studs. If I fit the 948 housing on the 1275, the outlet points at almost 10 o'clock. Moss lists several different housings. I am retaining the original downflow radiator.
Any advice appreciated.

Good Morning Jack; you are correct.

You need the housing, Moss P/N 460-855. That fits the early 1275's, as they still used the downflow radiator.
The 948 housing is clocked differently, and you have to do some creative plumbing to use it.

Jack: The 948 housing on the 1275 head results in the outlet pointing more towards the distributor. Kind of tough to get the hose to fit in that direction.

Jeff: I kind of thought that the Moss 460-855 might be the right one, but I was concerned that I might need the 460-885 because of the "12V..." designation and that one is NA. I guess I will try the 460-855. Of course, it is the most expensive housing!
