overdrive problems

I installed my ebay purchase overdrive and it did not engage. When I dropped the filter I found a half brass ring laying on the screen, I guess this would be my problem. Also has anyone ever dropped the tranny out the bottom without removing the engine?

Not sure about a hybrid with a V8 but with a 'standard MGB' the ONLY way is out with the engine.

EDIT: It ~can~ be done, but you end up nearly pulling the engine anyhow to get the angle to allow the gearbox to be removed. Don't waste the time and endanger yourself or others trying it. It's no "shortcut". I know.

Hi , what type of brass ring did you find ? there are all sorts in there from thrust washers , spacing washers ,bearings etc . What does it look like ? Was it out of the overdrive or the main gear box.
It could be simple and a spacing washer has crumbled ,but Does the solenoid engage ? Is the accumulator spring strong enough ?Are the balls for the pump non return valve and the operating valve seated correctly? Unfortunately if you are finding bits inside I feel you will need to remove and strip to find the culprit.

Same type questions I have....

It is possible to remove a non-OD transmission without removing the engine (though I don't know why ahybody would want to do so) - but it IS NOT possible to do the same with an OD trans (oh, if you want to cut your body cross members out, you can force it - however, its not worth it.)

Here's a tech tip on pulling the non-OD trans by itself...[HINT: Get the car about 3 feet in the air before trying it!]

https://www.theautoist.com/pulltranny.htm

...& another way to remove the trans by itself, once its free from the engine, is to rotate the entire transmission 1/4 turn so you can remove the 'shift tower'...then, after rotating the transmission back to its normal position, you can drop it without moving the engine (a bit harder than the above tip though).

However, having done it once, I guarantee you I'll never ever do it again!

I erased and wrote over just about the same thing in my first reply, Tony. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

"If you're proficient with an air chisel and have a wire welder to repair the damage afterwards, it's possible. You'll have the engine half way out anyhow, and the car needs to be on stands so high as to be scary. Not worth the aggro."

...or words to that effect.

I've done it too. ONE time. NEVER again.

Come on boys...if you use the gas axe, you can carefully cut along the floor to remove the complete tunnel. Up comes the trans.
Cheers, David.
Please do not try this!

Just do not want to hear later about the "folded-up" B that is for sale at a very reasonable price.
Cheers, David.
