For some time my car has not been riding as smooth as it should. I've been looking into getting new shocks for a while but haven't made the purchase yet.....
Now I know the cause of my not-so-comfortable ride.... the nut and lock nut had come off and it was NOT mounted at the top at all

That'll do it!

Was it OK after you reattached it?

I have noticed that suspension wear is like that old saw: the boiled lobster, which doesn't realize it's being cooked if you increase the temperature slowly. As it wears, the ride and handling get worse so slowly that you don't really notice it--until you replace the worn stuff, and it's suddenly a revelation.

I was unable to reattach it since I could not buy the top rubber bushing, the metal washer and both nuts for the top.
I probably could have found the nuts and bushing if I keep looking. It's time to replace them anyway, so tomorrow I'll place my order.
And you are correct, I didn't notice it as it must have been deteriorating over time.

I don’t have the model number but they are twin tube and adjustable on the car, and come with polyurethane bushings.
