/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif I spoke this day with Mike Lempert and ordered Agatha a steering wheel. I enjoyed chatting with him. He posed a query to me, "Do you know about rear end gears?" Sad to say, I do not. I asked him what he was talking about and he said it was for me to find out.

So.................. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gifHELP! banana: /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

Well Judow, Mike makes a set of special gears[ Ring & Pinion set] for the rear end of the big healey. If they are purchased and installed they will reduce the RPM of your engine at speed on the freeway.---Keoke

Hi Zblu,
Here is Mike’s website . It says the gear replacements are for hypoid bevel gears, but it’s always worth asking him. If there is enough interest, he might make a batch (or has made a batch in the past).

Discusses these gear sets:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]These Austin Healey 3.54 ring and pinion gear sets are brand new direct replacements for the hypoid bevel gears found in nearly all big Healeys.

... the cars were not geared for high speed cruising. These gears reduce the final ratio by 10% or more, lowering the revolutions at speed and providing for a much more comfortable ride, less wear and tear on the drive train, and better mileage as well.
[/QUOTE]

The stock ratio is generally 3.91

I can vouch for the 3.54 gear sets. They really make the car much more drivable in both the city and highway. A very satisfied customer.

I have heard only good replies from those who have installed these gear sets. Particularly if you also install a Toyota transmission conversion. Of course you have to remove your rear axle and take to a qualified technician, or drive your car there and leave it (big bucks).

Thanks all for the education. Now I have another question.

If at a speed of 75-80, the rpms do not exceed 3500, isn't this okay? I drive the interstate frequently and in overdrive my rpms have never gone to 4,000 rpms and with husband Doug following me and vouching for my speed.

Oh yes, the speed limit on I-40 outside of my town is 75 mph, so I am legal.

Also, I really go by the feel and if the engine isn't laboring, I figure it's okay.

Thanks. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif (I really like those bananas!)
