Mounting Fender Mirrors

I'm considering putting fender mirrors on my 72 Midget. Are there any tips for mounting them, or is just a question of drilling holes and bolting them on? I'd be placing them above the center line of the wheels, and I know they're pretty much useless. But I think they're really cool. Thanks for the help with my other posts.

When I bought my MGA, it had the Lucas mirrors on the front of the fenders as you describe.. kind of like the originals..

They are an absolute PAIN!!!

As soon as I do the body over, I want to fill in the holes and re mount the mirrors..

They go out of whack all the time... Between brushing up against the car, accidently knocking them, or even pulling my dust cover over the car they go out of whack!!!

As much as I tighten, they still are not firm enough to hold their location..

And when it comes time to actually work on your engine, they are always in the way.. they are just at the point you always seem to want to lean over the engine... I even scartched the paint with the mirror hitting the paint..

I know thy look "cool" and follow suit to original repros... but unless your using a really "solid state" mirror, I would stay away from it!

Enjoy

I have fender mirrors and I love them. You have to get convex mirrors because the flat ones have too narrow a field of view to be so far away. The practical advantage is that you have no blind spot once they are adjusted properly. There are disadvantages like having to get out of the car every time you want to adjust them. Or recruit an offspring as my father did to me many times with this very car!

The only tricky part of mounting the mirrors is getting them even. Forget the old saying of "Measure twice, cut once". Measure three times. If they are uneven it will bother you forever!

Bob, I've never had a problem with my mirrors slipping. I have the rubber pad under each mount and I tighten the mirror disc screws fairly snug. I can still force them to move which is good in case something hits them (won't break the mirror) but they hold their own position just fine. Maybe your backing plate screws are not tightening properly?

Here is a photo of the mirrors on my '65 B roadster:

Yep... got the exact same things in the same postion on the A...The mounting to the fender is fine...its the socket joint that seems never to be tight enough.. and like you said, your jumping in and out of the car three times to adjust the mrrors, or ( per usual) before the wife gets in the car.. its "Honey, can you adjust the mirrors.. up.. no down.. no left.. up again.. right...not so much!"

My first A I put a set of racing mirrors on, (the teardrops)... they look ridiculous way up front, but I placed them just far enough up the fender, to still see them out of the windshield..almost is line with the post, so they were in line aprox. with the vents grills on the MGA... they worked great!!

P,S. How do you post your picture,, I have not figured that out yet.. your B lookes Absolutely great!!!!!

Bob... from 100 yards shy of the absolute opposite coast...

Thanks for the compliment. It's all in the lighting. Doesn't look that nice in person. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

To post a picture you need to first upload it to your (or someone's) web space. Then get the URL of the image (i.e. https://www.mywebspace.com/myphoto.jpg )

Next, make your post here on the forum and wherever you want the image to appear, insert an image tag before and after the URL. Example (leave out the spaces):

[ img ] https://www.mywebspace.com/myphoto.jpg [ / img ]

Note the '/' in the end tag. That tells the forum software where the end of the image link is.

You can also make a text link to the image by using the URL tag. Example (again leave out the spaces):

[ url = https://www.mywebspace.com/myphoto.jpg ] Link to photo [ / url ]

It will appear like this:

Link to photo
