jumping out of 2nd gear

After getting the Beast back on the road, a question to you all. Had the trans rebuilt by a very respected repair shop about three years ago, trans went in last year, then found out that under acceleration that if you are in second gear it will jump out of gear. Other wise the trans and OD work very well. Any ideas? And thanks for those who provided leads for transport.

Does it make any noise while in second before popping out?If does usually its a worn gears. Generally, if the shift fork is not to worn& the detent on the rail isn't worn& detent ball& spring are good,there are shims that set the play on mainshaft& laygear. Regardless without removal and inspection, its almost impossible to pinpoint one area or the other. If it was set up right, they may have missed worn engaging teeth(dogs)on the 1st-2nd slider hub or 2nd gear.Normally the problem is when letting off on the gas. Should be pretty obvious once shift cover is removed.Center-shift(cover) is easy to remove in car.Side-shift you got to watch for detent springs& ballss falling out. Cheers Genos2

Hlyguy, This can be a very difficult problem to rectify for a novice. This is because the problem can be as simple as a weak shift rail spring or as complicated as a worn hub in the 2nd 3rd gear slider.Similarly, a small rubber pad that spaces the shift rails and is located in the bell housing may have been over looked. I think for this type problem the novice is better off having a LBC specialist fix the problem. It is not difficult but you must know exactly what a good part and a bad one looks like.---Fwiw--Keoke

I had a Bugeye Sprite with a similar problem, jumped out of gear when decelerating. When I got the transmission installed after being rebuilt by a very qualified BMC mechanic, it still jumped out of gear. When I complained to the mechanic he said, if I had only told him of the problem (which I didn't, figuring it would be taken care of during the rebuild)) it could have been easily rectified. As Keoke noted, perhaps overlooked and possibly something not typically addressed in a transmission rebuild?
