Yesterday, I had to drive some 360 miles to a family funeral. Half of this was on two lane road and half on an interstate highway. This afternoon, while preparing to leave for my return, I started the motor and saw the oil light flicker. It had never done this before, so I checked the oil levelfound it surprisingly low. I added two quarts of oil. Peering underneath the car, I saw no substantial leak.
On the drive north and east from Massachusetts to Maine, I drove for a couple of hours and stopped for a break. When I slowed up I noticed the light flicker slightly again. I turned off the car and found the oil level down once again. By now it's quite dark so I can't view much under the car. I had to stop twice again over the next 120 miles to check the oil and found it low again.
The car was running quite well; the power was spot on and the temp gauge stayed at the normal 1/4 - 1/2 level.
When I arrived a motel tonight, I noticed fresh oil underneath the point where the transmission bolts onto the engine, and near where the oil pressure switch is located. The oil appears to be away from the filter housing.
The back of the car, under the trunk lid, has a spray of oil on it from the drive. This leads me to believe that the oil is pushing out under pressure.
I have another 150 miles to go tomorrow to return to work. Any ideas of what to look for under the car?
Thanks,
Jeff Aronson
