garage floor covering

Anyone used paint type floor covering (like www.ucoatit.com)? I'm curious how hard it is to apply and how durable it would be. Does it provide any insulation (warmth)over concret? Any brands preferred?

I used Benjamin Moore pure epoxy - no affiliation, just a satisfied customer. Critical is preparation, and the type of paint used - pure epoxy is harder to work with but more durable. 1.5 years later I am very happy with the floor - weld spatter is the only way I have succeeded in marking the paint; the result is a little black burnt spot. (The expoxy paint does "scratch" easily, so what used to be a nice shiny floor is now a uniformly flat coat.)

Bottom line: I love it.

I am not sure if U-Coat-It is water/solvent based or pure epoxy.

I doubt it provides much warmth; it is maybe 10-20 mils of epoxy on a cold floor.

The key to a floor that will stand the test of time, and the heat of your tires, is in the prep work on the cement. Call your local garage floor guys and ask them what they do to prep the floor before they apply their product.

5 years ago I installed the Rustolum floor. I did everything per instructions. Which included using an acid cleaner on the cement. After 2 years the epoxy started flaking up from the tires and in other areas. I had 3 professional garage floor companies come to my house and give me estimates to re-due my floor. They all said that they use either a machine grinder or machine bead blaster to remove a thin layer of the cement. None of them recommend any chemical etcher.

So, in your search for a do-it-yourself floor coating product, question them about cement prep. You may be able to rent the machine the professional floor guys use.

You know me from my posts. If I can do it, I will. I tried the floor system. From what I learned about the guys who do this for a living, I decided to have them do it. Did I get what I paid for? Absolutely. I could not have applied as beautiful a floor as they did. I also have a 10 year warrantee.
