Diff drain plug sealant?

My diff weeps a bit of oil, and the Haynes Manual says to apply a bit of "sealant" to the plug when it's replaced.

What's a good sealant for such a plug???

Also, my diff drain plug does not go anywhere near flust with the differential casing, it sticks out about 1/3 or so of the threads can be seen protruding. I removed it, cleaned the threads carefully and torqued in back in. Is this normal? :confuse:

Teflon tape?

ya my drain plug sticks out a bit as well, which is normal for "tapered" pipe fittings I guess, I have found the liquid pipe dope to work well, I think the stuff I have is PST, made by Locktite... if memory serves me correct.

I use teflon tape. My 62 leaked a lot of gear oil from the plug. A little teflon tape on the threads and it never leaked again.

Yup. Teflon tape or Hylomar.

I use Permatex "Blue" and don't have any problems- that is just what I have on the shelf.
