TR6 Couple of general resto questions

I have another thread on my 6 taking the engine out to get rebuilt. I am wondering, since the engine is going to be out, is there any way to tighten up the spearing box? Does the big nut on top do anything to take up a little slop? I am going to replace the oil pump as a wear item. Does any one make a high performance pump? I am going to clean up the engine compartment and paint the radiator, as well as some of the black brackets in there.

There are 'washer like' shims of various thickness under that cap, that you are calling a 'nut'.
You should be able to find instructions in the "STEERING" chapter of your manual as to what you can expect by trying different combinations of damper shims affecting the rack and pinion backlash
You do have a manual, right ?
You'll need to find precisely where the 'slop' or as I call it 'lost motion' is in the steering...might not be inside the rack.

See section 57.25 in the workshop manual. Another possible problem area is the inner tie rod ends. On one of the Stags, someone had assembled the end wrong and it had a huge amount of slop in it.

Also don't ignore the line that says "Using tool S341".
On a buddy's TR6, I found that someone had just tightened the clamps without spreading them, and his rack was sliding back and forth by a good 1/4" when turning hard. I cobbled together a spreader by turning an old wooden carpenter's clamp inside out, and he said the improvement was incredible.

Also wondering, I run SU HS-6 carbs. What needle are people running in this application. They came from a TR-4.

Not sure where you clamp would go. I switched to the TR 4 solid aluminum rack mounts years ago and the rack stays where you want it. I have new tie rod ends I'll install. Where can I get inners if they are worn?
