A couple of clutch questions

Hi guys - I pulled the clutch assembly off the '74 TR6 and have a couple questions if I may.

How far through the clutch life was I based on these pictures?

Does this indicate that the engine rear seal gone?

And finally - this has nothing to do with the clutch - but let it be a warning for anyone who thinks that allowing the 6.5 year old to skip a day at camp won't result in indignity for the dog. It will.

in my opinion, looks like grease comming from around the flywheel bolts/ crankshaft pilot bushing over greased most likely, No oil leak, clutch disk, hard to tell whats left, doensnt look burnt, if you measure how much thickness you have total and the clearance you have from the top of the rivets and know new thickness you could have plenty of life left, depends on if you have the cash to replace it or not or dont mind taking the tranny out again. looks ok by the pics

ps if the clutch is slipping probably due to grease contamination and you will need a new clutch disc, clean the Pressure plate and it will be ok

Hi Don - I was going there but decided I'd had enough of the eBay seller. On the TR4 I ended up getting the stock one shaved/lightened.

While the clutch is out, it's a good time to replace the rear seal.

I tend to agree that the pilot bushing got overgreased. A leaking rear main tends to leave it's nasties on the backside of the flywheel and inside of bellhousing. As to clutch disk wear I usually look to the rivets and the amount of meat left before the rivet comes into contact with the flywheel/clutch cover. It's kind of hard to tell when the only disk you've ever looked at is a used disk but if you compare it to the new disk you can see how much material has been worn off. Clutch disks don't have a ton of meat to begin with so they always tend to look worn out. Most people just replace them but I suspect a number of the replaced disks have more than 50% of their life remaining. One thing that's never worth reusing is the throwout bearing. They tend to barely hang in long enough to last a clutch cycle and they are so cheap it's not worth messing with.

FWIW - Taylor is looking forward to babysitting duties.
