I was up early to drive the bug yesterday and realized the rear lights were not working. All other lights are working, including brake lights. I'm puzzled -any ideas on where to start?

Are the front lights working? If so, then check the connections going it to back.

Pull the bullets apart going to the rear and clean off the "GREEN".

I've had brake light switches go bad, has yours been replaced or repaired?
If you have the old original type you can take it apart and repair it - it will be much better than any non-NOS replacement.
Easy enough to check, put a meter on and see if it opens / closes the circuit when the brakes are pressed.

Oh Yeah, even simpler stuff to start with.

or just short it out and the lights should come on.

See how our brains work. We fix these things in our heads. it's all an experience thing. My neighbor mechanic fixed my Acura on Wednesday. Started car, all the warning lights came on, missing real bad. I feared the worst. Smell of sulphur. Related this to my local guy 4 doors down. His answer, oh that's probably a bad coil on one of the cylinders. He started unplugging cylinders/coils one at a time till he found which one was bad/leaving connected made no difference in how the car ran. Swapped with known good coil and bingo confirmed which was the bad one. $58 for the part and $50 for labor I was back on the road. Ita all in the experience.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been busy working on other vehicles. My headlights, brake lights, and all other lights work. I guess time to get to work. I'll post what the problem was.

It ended up being a poor connection at the ignition/ light switch. It was only 2 years ago I put in a new wiring harness. I used dielectric grease for most connections-guess which contacts I forgot to grease? Thanks for the advice.
