TR2/3/3A Brought the TR3 Engine Back From Machinist

Picked up the engine parts this morning from the machinist and now get to put it all together. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

Had the block and head boiled out, cam bearings replaced along with the core (freeze out) plugs. The crank was magnafluxed and ground to 0.020" under. It had been ground once before. The con rods were rebushed and sized. A valve job was done on the head with hardened inserts on the exhaust valves. They installed the new valve springs and keepers I got from Ken Gillanders and milled the head 0.085". Everything was then balanced seperately. Crank, con rods and flywheel.

The machinist gave me some plasti-gauge to check the crank clearances and a bottle of assembly lube. All this for $1060! I'm a happy camper. I'm starting to get things together now. I'll take my time, but should have this wrapped up by the middle of the week.

OK, OK, I'll post some pics after I get some of the work done on the block. I'm dry running the liners to check how far up past the deck they are, and am chasing all the threads in the block and I'll give it a coat of paint. After that, I'll take some pics!

OK, here's some pics. The block needs just a little more wire bushing on the inside. The rust that you see is very superficial. The figure of eight areas are really in very good shape. If you look at the connecting rods, you will see that the second from the left has no grinding marks on it. Apparently that was the lightest one. The other three have been ground both on the rib that you can see, and on the very top of the rod. The valves that are in the head are the originals. None had to be replaced, however, there are new bronze guides in there.

OK, got the cylinder liners in. Three of them measured 0.004" proud, one was closer to 0.0035". Right within spec. I bit the bullet, and bought Moss's Wellseal at an outrageous price to use on the figure-of-eight seals. It's really nice stuff though, and I'll be using it elsewhere on the engine. I'll set the scroll seal next, and call it a day.

The way things are going, it would've been cheaper to drop a five liter Ford in this thing!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer.gif

Looking good Art, looking good.

My wife was filing some receipts in a drawer near my desk the other day. She said that she had a few from the Triumph. I opened my file drawer and neatly placed them at the rear of a rather large folder. She said, "Have you ever added those up?" I replied that I never did and never planned to. She laughed and walked away saying "That's probably a not good thing to do".

End of discussion.

My point is that you would then have a car that might be faster, but I doubt that you'd be happier with. Besides, till you got done beefing things up for that engine, you'd be even deeper in the piggy bank.
