BJ8 Choke Problem AGAIN

I just got a new primary choke cable from AH Spares in England. It was extremely difficult to pull the choke out even with it not istalled in the car. I E-mailed AH Spares and got this reply:

Thank you for your email regarding the choke cable CBS 105. We've checked our stock and we found that they are very stiff, they do not lock when turned left or right. They have a spring loaded ball that sits in the groove (you can see the black clip that holds the ball on the body of the outer
casing). We oiled the stem of the cable and this made a big difference ,as the cable gets used it will free off.

If this is a duplicate of an original BJ8 choke cable, then I would think that it should lock if you turn the knob left or right. Has anyone had any experience with the AH Spares primary choke cable? It LOOKS exactly like an original and is well built. The price right, only $25.00 delivered to my door from England.

I've never seen the AH Spares choke, does it have a groove in the choke shaft. Here is a link to a small article about choke levers. It's not really about your issue, but it may shed some light. Michael's Blog

Greg,

I went to Micheal's blog. The AH Spares choke cable is exactly like the one illustrated in the blog. It has a groove in the shaft and a ball bearing under a circular spring. My opinion is that the ball in the AH choke is too large. It causes the shaft to go in and out with great difficulty and would prevent rotating it out of the groove to friction lock the shaft. I sent an E-mail to AH Spares stating that, but I have not had a response from them yet.

Hi Larry,
I wonder if a hardware store would have smaller ball bearings. Not the chain hardware stores, but the mom and pop neighborhood ones. They always seem to have the cool useful things.

Greg,

I apologize. I was wrong about the ball bearing. I took the cable apart and it has a piece of plastic where the ball bearing should go. I thought that it was an exact duplicate of an original, but I guess not. Maybe I can find a ball bearing that will work some how.
