BJ8 choke adjustment

Have been looking at the choke function. It seems like it works by lowering the jet and also opening the throttle. Cant find any description of it in the workshop manual, so I ask you for help.

How is it supposed to be adjusted, the first half of the pull seems to lower the jet and the rest of the pull also opens the throttle, is that correct? I thought you should raise rpm earlier, atleast my engine doesnt run very well with the adjustment i got now.

Does the choke cables have a black plastic covers or not, there doesn't seem to be that plastic cover on them in the spare parts catalogues?

You have it right, as you pull the cable it opens the jet first. The RPM is and can be set to your liking. I like to have rpm's up around 1500 when choke is pulled and engine is running. Plastic covers to my knowledge come on the cables new and are not bought separate.

Yes NIB, they had a separate loose fitting black plastic cover. You can probably find a suitable substitute at a hardware store.

To set the choke knob pull it out about 1/2" from the dash when engine is cold and adjust the carbs for 2500 RPM on the Tach.---Fwiw--Keoke

The fast-idle should engage BEFORE pulling on the jet linkage.

To quote SU:
(a) Reconnect the mixture control wire with about 1.6mm (1/16") free movement BEFORE it starts to pull on the jet operating levers.

(b) Pull the mixture control knob until the linkage is about to move the carburettor jet operating arms, and adjust the fast-idle screws to give an engine speed of about 1000 r.p.m. when hot.

(c) return the control knob and check that there is a small clearance between the fast-idle screws and the throttle stops.

Thanx for the answers. I will adjust them according to the instructions given here. I found the car almost drowning itself with the choke on because of too little increase in throttle.

Regarding the cables, I just recieved some new I was goind to install and they came without the covers, I will reuse the old untill I find new.

I think i better do a full rebuild of the carbs later this year. I was planning on waiting until the summer season is over, so I just do some quick fixes right now. I looked at Randy´s many good pictures on his homepage of the rebuild he is doing on a similar car, very interesting to see.
