Arrgh! Carb Conversion Rant

Frustration: Finding out things that seem to be going really well aren't

LBC Frustration: Thinking this went well and you are about done...then

I am fitting Stromberg 175 CD Carbs to my TR250 to replace the emmission control 175 CD-2s currently on the car. They bolted right up, the connection rod for the throttle shafts fitted with the throttle connection even fit perfectly to the new shafts I bolted it all in and snugged it down and....went to move the pushrod throttle mechanism by hand and its totally stuck.

Moves fine in the other direction, the throttle plates on the 175 CDs rotate in the opposite direction of the CD2s, I think I could flip the plates and springs around, maybe, but I don't think they are meant to be that way.

Otherwise will have to futz around with the throttle linkage, I liked it when I thought I could use the stock mechanism and not have to cobble something together, then I had the problem and it was time clean under the fingernails to go out with the wife for new years. Was excited about firing her up on the new carbs before I quit, was not to be.

Will try to figure something out tommorrow (which is already today)

How about using a Ratco cable kit and eliminate the mechanical linkage altogether? This is it on my triples, but it was designed for twin carbs:

You will probably not have to bend the bracket like I did, from what I've been told by those who use these on twin carb engines.

I'm not sure that's gonna help, Paul, unless glemon figures out a way to mount the Ratco upside down... which might be a decent solution afterall.

OOPS!!! Sorry about that! I misread his intentions or rather needs from the linkage.

I did a major reconfigure of the stock linkage parts involving much trial and error, and have the throttle linkage working well.

I fired it up and it seems to run better with the new old carbs, mixture and balance wear all good from my trial settings, just had mess with the idle speed.

Got the choke rigged up too, just need to run the the hardware store tommorrow and get a little stiffer return spring.

It seems to idle a little smoother and seat of the pants has a crisper throttle response, don't know why that would be since the basic airflow specs and such of both carbs should be about the same, I also like being able to adjust the mixture while the motor is running rather than the trial and error method with the newer carbs.

Preliminary impression, pleased, I always like how my 4A ran with the older Strombergs, so was hoping for similar results if fitted to the 250.
