walnut display cracks

My wooden display panel is cracking. The varnish "I guess" is cracking and flaking around the edges. Should I just leave well enough alone or can it be sanded and revarnished. Has anyone else had this problem and has anyone found a remedy?

When my dash cracked like that it was so bad it lifted up the veneer. I ended up making a new solid hardwood dash out of rosewood.

If the veneer is still good (not wavy) you can re-varnish. If it's seperated, but not yet wavy, use some gorilla glue or elmer's Probond (follow the directions on the bottles - applying a dab of water before gluing) in between the layers and clamp them together tightly... Then revarnish. Wood is pretty easy to work with, don't let it run you off if you've never worked with it before.

Ahh, seven coats of varnish or three of the modern stuff, well sanded between coats and it will look like a table top.

Not a difficult thing, check your local boat yard. They do lots of varnish stuff.
