Cracks in '68 banjo steering wheel

I just noticed cracks in the steering wheel rim, just above where the wires from the hub meet the rim. There are cracks on the front (dash side) and back (driver side). They don't look like they're connected, yet. I am guessing that there is a metal core/rod around the rim.

Is this cracking common or just waiting for a bad time to snap off in my hands?

Thanks everyone.
Lynn

There's a rod goin' the circumference, it won't disintegrate in your hands.

As Doc said. Wheels on English/European motors are some times weak to our US standard. They made wheels for steering and not for pulling yourself out of the seat, etc. I do think that the materials used don't suit our heat/cold climate.
Fix your old wheel and take care of it.

BCF WIKI Frank has done a nice job describing how to repair and restore your steering wheel. Not costly and does not take long. I've done three already.

Anyone have a complete one for a '68 US spec B that's gathering dust in the garage?
