Valve adjustment

The Bently manual indicates that the valve setting on on my BJ7 is 12thou cold, the moss catalog indicates 15 thousand cold. Which is correct?

My BJ7 has an aluminum valve cover. No factory cover when I purchased the vehicle.

The moss spec page indicates that the BJ7 and BJ8 had the 15 thousand clearance. Perhaps this setting applies to the later BJ7's that had the 2 inch carbs and a different cam profile.

Any thouughts?

My BJ8 valve cover says .012 cold. Usually this discussion is about "hot" or "cold". You can look on previous post history for some very interesting discussions.I think .015 is wrong. You may also want to call Moss and discuss it with them. They have good tech support. (use their toll free number in their cataloge)

When in doubt, err on the slack (15 thou) side. In any case, if you time your valve openings, then depending on the condition etc. of your camshaft, you can have more than 3 thou variation overall.

To add a bit.
The BN1, BN2's had no tags but the shop manual recommended .012 cold.
The 100M cam recommended .015 cold.
The BN4, BN6, BN7, & BT7 had a riveted brass plate which had .012 hot.
The BT7 & early BJ8 had a riveted brass plate that said .012 hot.
The later BJ8's had an aluminum riveted tag that said .012 cold.
The last BJ8's had a stick on foil label that said .012 cold.

In reality, there is very little difference in gap between hot & cold. It actually won't make much difference which of the clearances you use as long as they are accurately & uniformly set. I personally would use .012 cold. If using an aftermarket cam, use the makers suggested clearances.
