TR6 TR6 bumper overriders?

Can someone tell me the function and history of the bumpers overriders on the early Tr6's?

Which early over riders are you referring to? Could you be meaning the later rubber over riders?

The history is that BL felt they had to comply with American insurance companies self-righteous "safety standards" with regards to bumper heights/crash protection in the 70s. American manufacturers bowed to the same pressure in 1976 when convertibles were discontinued because they were "unsafe".
Their function?
To take up otherwise useful storage space in my shed since they were removed many years ago, but KEPT in the name of authenticity. A better storage space would be in some back alley dumpster....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
I've actually HEARD people say they prefer newer 6s WITH the over riders. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif

The chrome ones were to keep bumpers that were taller from over-riding bumpers that were lower. When that happened to two cars with chrome bumpers they often locked up and one either dragged the other away or they jacked one up to untangle them.

It's just my opinion, but I think there real ugly!

For whatever it's worth, the tubular overrider bars sometimes seen mostly on earlier TR6s were dealer-installed accessories and NOT factory equipment. That said, they can be quite useful in protecting your 6 from careless drivers.

Years ago, I had a 1970 GT6+ with both front and rear AMCO accessory overrider bars, and I (sadly) had opportunities to witness first hand how valuable they were. In one instance, I watched as the driver of a huge Chrysler sedan (this is the late 1970s, when those were about the size of aircraft carriers!) actually pushed my GT6 a foot or two during a feeble attempt to parallel park behind it! Since GT6s of that vintage did not have full rear bumpers otherwise, pretty much the entire rear valence -- and every lamp on the back of the car --- would've been trashed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
