MK2 center shift trans question

I have a new to me MK2 3000. The trans shifts good for a 45 year old car. 4 or 5 times during the last 5 weeks (about 300 miles) while shifting into 2nd of into reverse the shift lever seems to disengage and move about loose. I then play around with it and eventually can can pull the shifter up an inch or so and sort of drop it back into gear. It then runs and shifts fine. The first time it happened I was shifting into reverse and pressed the shifter down as I shifted back (like driving a VW Bug). It had just been so many years since I had driven a Healey. You shouldn't be able to pull the shift lever out of its socket. Sounds like one of the roll pins that retains the lever is pushed back or sheared. Or maybe some problem with the shift lever retaining spring and circlip. You need to pull the trans tunnel and take a look.

Thanks Stretch. I thought others might have had this problem but I guess not. As long as I am careful, it shifts fine and goes fast. I will chech out your suggestion this winter.
