head gaskets?-copper of steel?

hi all, why go solid steel head gaskets instead of solid copper head gaskets in modified engines? i can't think of any advantages with steel other than if you have extremely close piston top to head clearance and the slight compressability with copper would run you into trouble. i notice that BFE sells steel ones.

I suppose there was a good reason why Superman wasn't called the 'Man of Copper'... but for a head gasket I would think Cu would be the stuff.

The steel gaskets were originally meant to be used in conjunction with the stock gasket to reduce compression in areas of the world where octane was poor... hence they were offered by Standard. But with copper available that would be the way to go if wanting a solid gasket -- goodness knows that some find even the solid copper difficult to get a good seal.

Hi Rob,

Talk to Ken at BF&E about solid copper head gaskets. He told me he's had a lot of trouble getting them to seal properly. OTOH, the shim steel gaskets are pretty bullet-proof.
