Exhaust manifold stud .. equiv. source?

I thought I could find a replacement exhaust manifold stud from a local auto parts store (don't want to order a $1 part (328-900) from Moss for obvious reasons) but I'm striking out. Checked NAPA when I was there the other day and called a few older auto parts stores but they don't have the 1 1/2" long studs with 5/16 x 24 threads on both ends .. only the more common kind with coarse threads on the short end. Does anyone know if there is an equiv. part in use on another car .. Jag, etc. so I could pick it up locally?

No luck, only had course thread in 5/16”. Did a search on Moss’ website. Looks like MGB intake manifold uses the same part #. Here are the results. part # 328-900 Some auto chains (Kragen and Pep Boys) have drawers of parts like studs and freeze plugs. The drawers are marked “Dorman” and are usually behind the service counter, more times than not, the employee’s have no idea what’s in them.

Thanks for looking! I did check in one Dorman cabinet at a local Laguna auto parts store but their stock was almost depleted (they sell more house hardware items than car parts anymore).

Hi Tracy,

I went through my lists and found a few oddball things that I'm going to try to order from a Healey supplier back east tomorrow am. He'll probably have the stud so don't knock yourself out trying to find an extra.

When I needed some exhaust studs my local Healey parts man found me Jaguar studs that needed threading down and trimming to length, otherwise no problem.

Yeow! I can just feel that engine stand straining. Is it a three wheeler? Be careful. It has a center of gravity about like a Saturn Five. (one who knows)

Yup it's a three wheeler but a fairly beefy one. It's best to keep the 'head down' when moving it around since the CG is much lower. I had the motor rotated sideways to do a few things but quickly changed it back to vertical because the weight balance was not good. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

Bob .. thanks for the info on the Jag studs. I saw some of those on ebay a while back and they looked to be the same threads.

Hi John, Did you check the "Help Parts" group in a Pep Boys store. Why not just get a long grade 8 5/16" shoulder bolt cut off the head and thread the other end. Torque on these studs is only in the 30 ish pound range.---Fwiw--Keoke

I ended up ordering a few things today from Healey Haven so I'll have some when the pony express gets here! Good idea on the grade 8 bolt .. maybe someone else will see that some day and it will save the day.
