I spent my weekend ripping out the old interior insulation to put in a new carpet kit. It took the better part of my Saturday and all day Sunday. Finally get new Dynomat insulation, carpet, Miata seats, stereo components plus new choke cable installed. It's now 8PM.
I decide to treat myself to a nice ride out and go get something to eat. All's going well until about 3 miles from home. She just died. I was able to coast onto a side street. Try as I might she wouldn't stay running. I got her to fire once and stay running for 30 seconds, but then nothing.
I realized this wasn't going to be good. I'm out in the country. Wife is out of town, neighbors are out of town, and the only person that could come pick me up is 40 minutes away and doesn't drive at night. Let's just say I wasn't exactly dressed or ready to kick off my exercise program, but I hoofed it home. Wouldn't have been so bad but pounding pavement in boat shoes isn't a good thing. It was also very muggy and I looked like I'd fallen in the lake when I finally made it home.
Gathered up the old parts I'd taken off a couple days prior. Old plug wires, rotor button, and coil. Drove back over there (A/C on high!) and started working my way backward. Turns out the new Pertronix coil I got gave up the ghost. When I swapped in my old one it ran just fine.
I now have two cars in this location, and the same predicament of no one to help. Drove the Jeep back home last night, got a good night's sleep, and hoofed it back over there this morning. She fired right up with no problem and drove home without incident.
Lesson learned...keep some of your old parts in the trunk for a few days just in case something like this happens.
