Braided Wire Insulation

Hi Guys!

I am looking for a few feet of stock braided wire insulation for the license plate light and for the fog lamps.

Does any one know what vendor carries a close match for our Healeys? I looked at the Moss, Vic Brit, and Englishparts sites and didnt see any?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you!
Bob

p.s. Also looking for caps, protectors for the electrical connections to the front lamps inside the wheel wells. Mine are currently exposed to the elements.

Bob, look for an old established business for repairing electric motors. If they've been around since the 50s, they might have some old stock braid covered wire. Most all wire today and for the past 30 years is vinyl wrapped. PJ

Hi Bob,
Moss carries rubber connectors, #19 & 20, if this the type of protectors you're looking for.

If you're searching for the cloth type braided wire insulation, the places listed by Paul & Big6 should be able to help you.

If you're looking for the black tubing that protects the wires coming out of the boot for the license plate, you may find black vinyl tubing or shrink tubing at the local hardware store will work.

Some places like Frys electronics carries 4 feet long tubes of shrink tubing in various diameters. Get the diameter you need and don't shrink it if you don't need too. Click Frys shrink tubing

Good luck,
Roger

All the previous comments properly address your problem.

However Bob,Cosidering reliability, I would not use that cloth type wire in the applications you have cited.

Modern Plastc insulated stranded wire is a much better choice and should also be enclosed in the black plastic conduit.

somewhere recently someone talked about using hockey skate laces for a very effective braided cover for wires

I didn't see that one JPSmit, but if they are cloth like other shoe laces I would not recommend they be used. Preferably in these applications I suggest a wiring circuit that is highly resistant to absorbing moisture.--Keoke

The "Modern" cloth covered wire as provided by British Wiring is PVC insulated the same as any modern wire and the cloth cover is for appearance. If you find some old stock cloth covered wire, it's going to be insulated with 50+year old rubber and cloth. I wouldn't use it.

You are probably right Marv. However, what may not be common knowledge is that Plastic insulation on most electrical wire is not homogeneous.

For Military Purposes we specify the quality and test the wire to insure it complies.

When you put a moisture retaining cover over regular plastic insulate wire there is the possibility over time of moisture attacking the wire via the porosity of the every day type plastic insulation.--Fwiw--Keoke

If you're just doing short runs or simple repairs (in popular solid colors), any electrical supply house can provide you with HTML wire, in a variety of gauges. High Temperature Motor Lead has a woven glass fabric outer cover over a silicone rubber primary insulation. The conductor consists of many-many fine tinned strands, making it also very flexible, besides heat resistant.

Besides working with it for electrical controls, sensors & motors, I've also used it when working with O2 sensors on cars.
