In 1987 I was president of the Tampa Bay Austin-Healey Club and we hosted and organized the first Southeastern Classic, holding it in Sebring. We stayed at the Kenilworth Lodge where, we were told, many of the crews from the annual 12-hour race used to stay back in the day.
We also rented the track for a day as it cost only something like $800 (although at the time it was still splurging, given our budget), and among our registrants was a gentleman named
Phil Stiles. He wasn't our "special guest," he was just one of our registrants.
At the time we didn't even realize who he was - except that when I saw that he listed "FIA" among his car club affiliations, I knew that something was up - and when we began to figure out who he was and we noticed that he had not signed up for the awards dinner, I went to his room and invited him to join us and we also asked him to speak. It was quite a nice unexpected highlight of the first of this series of annual meetings that still take place each year. Next year will be the 25th Southeastern Classic!
