I tried, really tried not to buy another car but after looking hard at TR5s (thanks again Ian) and realizing I just didn't have the budget for a full on restoration a TR5 really deserves I decided to go a totally different direction. I missed having a coupe and got hooked on the idea of building a "rally" car for the long distance fast road touring events in SoCal.

Yep, I confess I like those beasties too. Watched one of them last fall at Watkins Glen, it kept up pretty well on the track I think.

Very cool, what kind of power plant are you planning?

Not entirely sure yet, but maybe a later generation four since they drop right in, are plentiful (I hope) and will give me a reliable 150 horse power +/-.

Not sure on the transmission yet - maybe a T5 since they aren't any more than a standard Volvo box and have some advantages in ratios and parts availability. Lots of research to do here still...

They were actually pretty fast back in the day - lots of rally success. Check out this YouTube video - it is directly responsible for my lack of discipline in picking up another car.

I love it. Drove a 72 Saab 96 for main driver quite a few years. You are busier than I. Auto cross and stuff.. I would probably just get a cup of coffee and go for a ride.

That's a lovely solid looking Volvo. They make great rally cars too.

I CAN'T SEE THE GEAR STICK. Is that a column mounted automatic shift stick ?

I know of a gearbox that's still in the 544 I sent away to a scrap collector two years ago that worked fine for my brother from new in 1963 to 1972 when I bought it from him with 92,000 miles on it and drove it till 1982 when it had 123,000 miles on it. Then it sat in my front drive from 1982 to 2007.

Good eyes Don - it is a column mounted auto. Evidently that is a pretty rare thing. It has been suggested to me that as long as I don't mangle it I can probably sell it and pay for the rest of the car (I didn't pay much).

I like those old Volvos! I feel real comfortable looking at the twin SU carbs they used.

"Aw Jeez, a Volvo?"

A Volvo is just an LBC made in Sweeden. Had one that I bought new. Bulletproof. Plenty of room to work under the hood (bonnet).

No kidding - time to thin the herd. I think the SD1 a TR6 and the motorcycle are on the way out. I will, of course, sell the best TR6 because I'm emotionally attached to the two crappy ones...

Did I hear sell the SD1? Did I ever tell any one I have a secret lust for a SD1, if it were closer to the Right coast
