Healey Passion vs. Healey Hack

Anyone who's taken the time to look over Steve Thomton's beautiful BJ7 Works Rally Replica https://stevesaustinhealey.com/ can appreciate the engineering and execution that went into the project. Some of the solutions, like this one involving gaining more clearance on the shroud cross brace to fit an electric cooling motor are quite elegant:

OTOH, we have me, who also needed to move the cross brace to fit an extra cooling fan. First instinct was to use a BFH, that's how they made the Sunbeam Tiger, right? I, too, however hit upon an "elegant" solution:

Note the clever use of my old Fiat 124 Spider scissors jack to make the necessary clearance. And I didn't even have to cut up any Healey sheetmetal.

I like simplicity! How does it hold up with the engine running?

Hi Rick,

I do admire Steve’s engineering and execution. As Patrick, I also admire simplicity and find your approach as being an elegant solution.

Creativity is always a kick,

LOL!!... HealeyRick I always enjoy your postings... and got a real kick out of this one. Yes, I am sometimes afflicted with over-thinking something!!!....okay, so maybe many times!... but I love a simple solution as much as anyone.... nicely done!

One of these days I'll get around to updating my site with my oil cooler installation... another case of over-thinking I'm afraid!

Cheers,
Steve

Well I admire you both and have learned from each of you! Check your sites often. But Rick, when you expanded that scissor jack did the engine move rearward or did the brace bend? the obvious rarely seems to happen with a Healey!

Hey Rick,

Funny post. Does this mean you are putting some miles on the car this summer? How's it running/driving?

Hi Ken,

I'm doing some driving and trying to iron out some rough spots. I had a pinion seal leak (nothing to do with the swap) so I had to remove my newly installed driveshaft to deal with that. It runs hot at low speeds and in traffic so I've been fitting an auxiliary electric fan. That's turned out to be a real adventure which I'll detail in a future Healey Hack post

Just returned from Europe. The Stelvio Pass was every bit as good as the You Tube videos and written accounts document. Definitely a bucket list item for any sports car guy or gal. You cannot go very fast (the motor cycles do!), but it is tons of fun. Forty-six switchbacks on the run.

I will post some images as soon as I can. We were staying in Guarda, Switzerland. Going to the pass and back and including the pass, we encountered 111 hairpins or switchbacks! Don't know if the Healey brakes and cooling system would have handled it? Cooling maybe, but I would have been wondering and worrying about the brakes all of the time - and I have discs all the way around.

While perhaps lacking the history and glamour, for those of us stateside, Highway 129 from Knoxville, TN leading into NC has a section called The Tail of the Dragon; it's three hundred eighteen (318) turns are condensed into eleven (11) miles.

It's usually pretty mild when I've driven through there during late August/Septemeber, so cooling problems wouldn't be too much of an issue, but the load on the brakes might be! I'll tell you this, it's a fair workout in an ///M Rdstr, so doing it in the Healey would separate the (well fit) men from the boys!

A friend of mine drove the Tail of the Dragon in an BMW M5... agressively drove it... boiled the brake fluid and warped the rotors. He went out at dawn to get a clear road. I'd love to drive it sometime... but maybe not in my Healey. He said motorcycle parts from mishaps were all over the place.

Cheers,
Steve
