I finally did get it running, have put a few mile on it since - in between rainstorms in So. Cal. but otherwise luvin' it!

Thanks again to those who provided tips!

Gotta a strange clicking sound under load (uphill for example) and got this nawing fear that I forgot the pilot bearing!

Excellent! Good for you!

Over here on the east coast (US), I expect to see some nice 'Beams in a few weeks at the Moss Motors Britfest (May 3-in NJ). Rootes is always represented with a number of Tigers, Alpines, Hillmans (Hillmen?) and even a Plymouth Cricket.

Here's an Alpine from last year's Britfest:

... which of course is a Hillman Avenger. I think I know who's car you are referring to, he's on the Yahoogroups Forum our car club hosts, last I heard he was "converting" it back over to a Hillman by changing all the badges (he's tired of trying to explain why a Plymouth is in a British car show).

BTW - Anyone know of any other Plymouth Crickets left, anywhere on the continent, he's always looking for more compatriot cars and parts cars (he has told me that for some reason virtually every Cricket has disappeared from scrapyards, there must be at least some hiding in backyards and/or farms somewhere...)

I owned a Plymouth Cricketā€¦.destroyed in low-speed head-on with a Chevy truck (their fault). Seat belts ā€œonā€ at my end, so no injuries, but the car was written off. I would imagine most Crickets have been re-processed by Nippon Steel and are reincarnated as Toyotas. Probably a few around, though.

I owned a Cortina at the same time: the ā€˜Tina was faster, but the Cricket seemed to handle nicer. Apparently, these cars are still built in Iran, under a long-standing license agreement.

The ā€œhotā€ Avenger/Cricket engine is the 1.6 and 2.0 BRM twin-cam. Very rareā€¦.hereā€™s a picture:
