Mini + iphone question

So, Mrs JP drives a 2014 Mini. It came with an iphone connection - one end is a two pronged wire - USB on one prong and 1/8 speaker jack (male) on the other. Both these sides plug into the dash on the car.

Other end is the charger prong for an iphone - which fits Mrs JP's iphone.

Here is the dilemma - relating to google maps.

If you have google maps functioning, and the phone isn't plugged in, the voice instructions come over the car speakers via bluetooth. If you plug the phone into the charger prong the voice instructions stop completely - on any device.

However, if you have the radio on "Aux" (AS OPPOSED TO RADIO) - say for a podcast from the same iphone, both google map instructions and podcast broadcast over the car speakers - even when plugged in.

any advice or thoughts gratefully received - except "use a map" this is kind of a big deal as Mrs JP gets very anxious when maps don't work right.

2010 E91, same issues. It is a pain setting volume - either google maps or The Rolling Stones are blasting to hear the other!

My solution depends on what I'm doing. If I unplug the speaker jack, the phone battery will charge and I can hear google maps over the phone speaker - plenty loud for me. If I want to listen to iTunes, I will futz with the volumes to get them properly adjusted. Or if my battery is full, I'll just leave the iPhone in one of the storage nooks - but I find maps uses a lot of battery.

My new Chevy truck is wireless to the phone, it can be in your pocket and the connection is strong. Sound comes through the car speakers and has no effect on the GPS. The maps will display while talking on the hands free phone system. Technology is getting out of hand. Now Driver-less cars and trucks?? All driver-less vehicles should be painted with orange day glow paint and have flashing lights all over it! I don't want to be on the road when one goes by! Just imagine 80,000 pound driver-less 18 wheelers coming at you, I can't comprehend it, but their testing them now! At least the railroad stays on a track, most of the time. :nightmare: PJ

Still no real resolution on the phone, but, driving around Toronto I am amazed how many cars are already effectively driverless - just sayin'
