What size modern tire will fit in spare tire well?

I guess I need to finally replace my original Goodyear 185R15 spare tire with a modern replacement. Does anyone know what size modern tire is thin enough to fit in the tire well and allow the panel board to fit in place above it?

I found the Coker reproduction at Summit for about $154, but hopefully it will never see the road, so I would rather find a cheaper tire for the spare(my 'regular tires are 16" with Konig Rewinds).

I thought about the compact spare, but decided to go back with a full size tire.

I am currently using a spacesaver spare from an Accura thanks to the info that bobbyd posted some time ago. It fits better and even gives you more room in the spare tire well.

You'd have to check with a tire size calculator, but if you still had a stock TR6 rim you might consider going with a 165-15 tire a la the TR3/TR4 cars. It would just fit in the well, definitely won't be too wide for the panel board, and you can get a decent road tire for maybe around $60-$75 or so.

As noted, you'll want to use a tire size calculator to see how it would compare to the tires/wheels you're using.

I replaced my Minilite replica alloys with 72-spoke chrome wires that are 5" wide on which I put 195/R15 Michelins. What I didn't count on was that the fifth wheel & tire wouldn't fit in the spare tire well. Now I own a brand new wheel & tire that I can hang on the wall of my garage, but that's about all! So now I need to go without a spare or else buy a sixth wire wheel but of the narrower width and with a 165R/15 tire. I think I'll go without a spare & call Hagerty Ins. if I get a flat. Anyone want to buy an unused wire wheel & tire? :-D

I wrote you a long treatise; it took nearly an hour. I got it all finished and the system "timed me out." I hope you get some good answers and you solve your problem. My experience was a bloody nightmare, three wheels, two tires.
