If the pan is off, block of wood or screwdriver handle against a crank throw and the block for hand tools. Impact wrench if you have one.

In general, keep handy a small array of wooden lengths and sizes. A couple of shims (plastic or wood) will come in handy for in-process fine-tuning. Wood or hard plastic are relatively harmless when wedged against steel, say, when you have to curb movement somewhere as to apply more-or-less self-conscious pressure nearby. Thus the aforementioned screwdriver handle and not its business end.

Another old trick is to put a length of rope into a cylinder so that the pistol cant come to TDC(cant compress rope)

Oh, no! Be interested in any final word on the "rope trick." Haven't run into that one before, so it'd be a shame if its novelty value turned out prematurely applauded.

I think the concern is that if you use too much rope, it could compress before both valves are closed. For safety, you can back off both of the valve adjusters (or remove the rocker shaft entirely) to ensure they are fully closed.

The last time I put a chunk of wood in the hole the starter came out. The flywheel bits into the wood and wedges in place.

I would advise against jacking up under the flywheel. That stresses the crank. You might get away with it, but that has been known to cause the flywheel (and part of the crank) to separate from the engine (on other types of engines, anyway).

You should be able to put the car in forth gear and block the wheels to stop the engine from turning. If not, I use about a 2x2 chunk of wood in the starter hole. When the engine turns, the flywheel bits into the wood with the chances of any damage minimal. When you want to remove the wood, turn the engine the other way. Just setting the engine on a block of wood with the leverage generator would just spin the wood out and could cause everything to fall to the ground.

Hi,

If the engine is in the car, I have removed the bolt by putting a socket & breaker bar on the bolt. Rest the breaker bar on the LH frame rail. Remove the coil wire and put the car in neutral. Bump the starter and its loose. Its works on my TR-3a.

Brutal. But effective.
