General TR What is the "best" red paint color for a TR3

My dear friends some good news, I'm finally at the painting stage. I've been looking at different red colored cars and I have found that there is a variety of choices: decisions, decisions.... I thought I'd throw out a question and find out what others think about my dilemma. What is your favorite variety, brand or opinions regarding LBC painted "red"? I do not like the original "Signal Red" as it seems to orange, some red paints are too bright so just for kicks, what is your opinion of the best red color for a TR3 like mine?

I have to stay with the original colors of the car so the interior will be black and the car red! Also, post a picture of your "red" car if you can! Thanks!

I personally prefer the Signal Red even though there may be more than enough red TRs in the world.

It doesn't seem orange to me though I have seen (and been parked next to) red cars that appeared orangish by comparison. Are you sure you're looking at a good example of Signal Red?

Here's mine though the color on a monitor tells you almost nothing as monitors & cameras and light all vary.

I didn't know they had anything but signal red! I was going to use that on my car but it came with a brand new tan upholestery kit so I went with BRG.

Geo. I was nodding in agreement with the statement about there being enough red TRs in the world )mine included), then I looked at the pic, very nice, the world would be a better place if more cars like that our there.

I didn't think the Signal Red was too orangy, but my wife thought my car could be a little deeper red when I painted it.

Ford Candy Apple Red (maybe late 60s, early 70s) is a bright deep vibrant red, I had a Sprite painted that color many many years ago, and it got lots of compliments.

Hi There Dorn,

Prior to my current TR3; I had a `73 Alfa Romeo Spider painted (Show Quality) in a "Deep, Blood, Ferrari Red" but It was`nt a "Ferrari" paint code nor an "Alfa Rossa Red"!! I got so many compliments on the color etc; You just can`t believe. I have the paint code somewhere if your interested.

My TR is a "Signal Red" & sort of Orangie but its an older restoration (`95) but I like it nevertheless. I`ll try & post a pic of ea.

During the 2008 Triumphest which was held at Lake Tahoe, after the group picture was complete the owners of the red TR3's decided to take a picture of only the red TR3's. There were about 20 of them, which was at least half of all of the TR3s at the show. After that I would say that the best red color for a TR3 is blue or white or yellow. Just an opinion.

I have a red TR4. When asked what color it is, I say "Signal Red" simply because that's the closest Triumph color it matches. When I park mine next to a verified original paint Signal red car - mine is much more orangey - because in fact its simply a decent modern red paint formulation. I like it! I suspect over half of the signal red cars out there have a similar pedigree!

My TR3 is painted with 1966 Mercedes Signal Red acrylic enamel. It was painted in 1978 and has held up quite well.

After reading your post yesterday, I was driving behind a 10 YO Nissan Xterra, and thought it was a pretty red RED.

Mazda has used a very good non-metallic red called "True Red" on the Miata since around 2006. To my eye, it's very close to original Triumph Signal Red - just a bit of orange in it, but not much. Nice colour.

Over the years there were about 6 different shades of Signal Red as the factory changed suppliers and paints improved. Early lacquer paint codes don't necessarily translate accurately in two-pak.

I once had a TR3A painted Porsche red because it looked good on a Carrera, but it was just all wrong. Should have test sprayed a panel before doing the whole car. Pricey lessen learned having it repainted a more correct Signal Red.
