Weber conversion

Has anyone tried the weber carb conversion for the TR7? Am thoroughly disgusted with the oem carbs, and this weber set up looks promising, if expensive.

Would like to hear from those who have experience with it before taking the plunge.

Thanks
James

James,
Before you scrap your Strombergs, consider boxing them up and sending them off to either Gary Martin or Joe Curto. What you will get back is essentially brand new carbs that run well with your setup. Webers are sent out with a generic set-up that has to be custom adapted to your car. Not the easiest thing in the world to do. I tried the Weber DGV setup on my TR6 and rued the day I did. Could NEVER get them right, even after some "Weber experts", read that German-auto-mechanics-at-85$-per-hour, set them up. Gary Martin sent me three (3) "new" Strombergs that are soooooo easy to adjust....

James,

After grappling for months with the Stromberg vs. Weber issue on my XJ6C, which uses the same carbs as your car, I tend to think that Dr. Bill is giving you the best advice. I have heard the same said from many members of the forum when I posted a similar question. If you are bent on Weber conversion and can't be swayed, however, the most helpful company I found was on the net as www.carbsonly.com. They are a Burbank, CA high-end carburettor specialty shop. They more than likely have the complete kit for your car, which will include everything you need to make the switch. If you wish to contact them, I believe Gary was the name of the gentleman that was so helpful to me....

Good luck and expect a parts total in the $900 to $1000 range, another reason to consider a professional rebuild of the 175cd Strombergs.

A single DGV is too small for a TR6. Twins could be made to work. For any inline six, though, obviously triple sidedrafts is the way to go, if you can afford it, and tune it.
For the TR7, I dunno.. The DGV MIGHT work nicely, and it might be a dog. The DGS would probably be a better bet, if they make a kit???
Twin sidedrafts would look awesome and put out a ton of power, but you're back to the tuning and cost issue.
I bet if you were even mildly motivated you could pull the K-jet injection off an early to mid 80s Saab (engines share a common heritage) and fit it, and it'd be cheaper and more reliable than any carb setup.

James , dont forget that the SU's will bolt up nicely, and work well also. I have seen it done with good results.......but it is thriftier to get the old carbs re-built.

I replaced the OEM Strombergs on my '79 TR7 with twin downdraft Webers many years ago. They work very well but are jetted a bit to rich. I sure you could correct this with a jet kit if you really wanted to fiddle with them. However you are talking some pretty big bucks for a Weber conversion these days. I got a really good deal on mine but if I had to do it all over again I think I would stick with the Strombergs. If you can get them sorted out they should be OK. What specifically is the problem with them? I may can offer some assistance.

I may have to go back to the Strombergs due to impending emission tests in my area. The water choke never worked on mine. Does anybody know if a manual choke conversion kit is still available?

"Fiddling with them" is an understatement. The jets offer an endless combinations of adjustments that pure luck would only suffice in giving a satisfactory result. Yes, there are a few of you out there that have DGV's that work, where "few" is the key word. Too, think about this, the fuel has to go down, over, up and in, where a sidedraft goes straight in. ZS carbs are infinitely simpler, and cheaper.

Before you do anything you might pick up a copy of the Haynes techbook for webber carbs. It also has sections on SUs and Zeniths and specs on all of them. also has setup specs on lots of different engines. If nothing else its a great reference source if you mess with carbs.
