MGB ugh.....the fuel gauge went to *** again!

so I changed out the gas tank and float on my 1978 MGB. No issues. Fuel gauge worked great! fast forward about a year and a half and it is not working again. Now I do NOT drive the car much at all. its basically to go to car shows. The tank I think is full so suggestions to check this other than:

1. siphon out gas
2. remove the fuel float
3. replace.

I guess it could be the fuel gauge indicator on the dashboard or the float is crap, but it was new and i got it from Moss Motors..just a like replacement.

Your tank should have a drain plug? Would pull the sender, if this is the only problem with the dials as they share current.
Brass floats are the best, but the senders are schyte in my opinion.

Not sure exactly how they are mounted in B's but it could also be the ground

Assume the other gauges are working. If not, it could be the voltage stabilizer, or a fuse. There's a simple test to check the fuel gauge. Disconnect the lead at the sending unit. Turn the ignition on. The gauge should read empty. Ground the lead and the gauge should read full. Turn ignition off.

Leave the lead disconnected and use an ohm meter to measure the resistance of the sending unit. It should be around zero if the tank is full and about 100 - 200 ohms if empty.

I had the same problem and it was the voltage stabilizer. On the 72 it was positioned inside high on the driver's side firewall. PJ
