Tranny Top Finished, YEA!

I completed the transmission top cover today YEA! Happy to say that it works slick as goose grease ummm, bearing grease. Still have to fiddle with the overdrive switches but it all works fine.

On to the over drive and then finish assembly of the tranny. See a dim light at the end of the tunnel.

Anybody have feelings about adding the dipstick/filler to the tranny? I put a dipstick top on my 60 TR3 in place of the standard top. I feel that if it is easier to check/fill, I will do it more often.

It's a simple thing to do. Drill a hole in the boss where mine is shown. My 1958 TR3A came with it that way, and I like it.

I didn't bother trying to add the dipstick hole; just rebuilt a cover that already had the hole to go on my 4-synchro gearbox. I definitely like the dipstick (but not enough to go poking holes in the Stag for it

Sheesh, now you got me thinking that I need to go back to the drawing board with mine. Is that a screw in dipstick?
Someone tell me what I did with my tunnel please? For months it has been sitting under the tail end of the car now its gone and I don't remember what or where I put it. Tough to get old.

Anyhow looks like a make sense idea to me.

Hey Skip, Yep plenty of hours when you consider the research and waiting for parts, good thing its a hobby! I couldn't afford to do this for a living.

There are no threads on the dip-stick. There is the top plate which really is your knob to pull it out. Just below is a cylinder which is covered all around with a piece of felt about 1/16" or 1/32" thick. (I'm guessing) The felt is the "seal" but I have never had any oil come out this felt seal on the dip-stick in over 50 years. That's how old the felt on my dip-stick is.

Oil only drips downwards out of any TR.

Then there is a long rod that has two "v" notches filed across the rod to indicate low and high level. I drilled two small holes about 1/32" diameter through the rod where these "v" notches are filed to make it easier to check the oil level. The capilary action in a drilled hole is easier to "read" because you can see if the cross hole is filled with oil or not.
