TR6 TR6 alternator conversion

Ok, I give up. I know I've read about higher output TR6 alternator conversions on this forum but I can not get the search engine to find it?

My second rebuilt alternator died and the vendor does not want to do Triumph any longer (Advanced Auto).

It is for a 1972 TR6 with two plug connections.

Any help would be appreciated. I think I want to go with something smaller, higher output etc.

There are several ways to go. I don't recall reading any nice articles on using one of the newer 'mini' alternators, but I know a lot of the racing folk are using them.

But if you are just looking for a little more output (especially at idle), the easiest conversion has to be the Bosch alternator from a 78-80 Ford Fiesta (with optional Bosch alternator). Bolts right on, has the same plug, etc. And should be available (tho perhaps special order) through Advance Auto.

Several good articles at :

I installed a GM alternator using the VTR instructions given above. I have been very pleased with it. I did have to do some grinding on the alternator, and change the connector to GM, but it wasn't difficult and it works well.

Bailee2,

I've got the Bosch mentioned above and it's a direct fit; it even uses the same fan belt. Mine is a 72, but I had to get a wiring plug kit from Moss (part number: 540-280) for like $6. The installation was pretty simple.

For safety sake, I ran an extra 8 gauge wire from the output of the alternator to the battery terminal on the starter. I did this just in case the battery gets drained and the alternator starts charging at full blast..., a happening that would probably melt the factory wiring.

If you have any questions, just ask.

Thanks I appreciate the quick responses.

I am leaning towards the Bosch.

Happy New Year!

Also found this for those of us (like me) who have a 5 plug.

This one?

https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1128293,parttype,2412

Specifically, ACDELCO Part # 3341058 {55 AMP #19134051}
GENERATOR,(REMAN) BOSCH EF (55 AMPS)
That looks right.

[/QUOTE]I don't see one on that page that looks right to me. The standard alternator for the Fiesta was a Motorcraft unit with a solid 'foot' rather than two tabs (and different brackets). Although you could probably make it work, it's a much more difficult operation than the (optional) Bosch unit. Likewise that 'standard' Ford externally regulated unit (which is what I have on my TR3A) is more difficult.

Thanks Randall.

so given a choice between rebuilding an original 5 plug or buying the replacement Bosch unit is their any reason (except for originality) to have the original one rebuilt?

This is the one (Motorcraft) they sold me as a Bosch
unit and it would take some careful machining to make it work. So I guess I need to take it back and try for a Bosch unit.
The Motorcraft unit also has screw terminal rather than plug-in.
Thanks.

Randall,

I just ordered one of those from NJ. I paid more than for the NAPA unit, but I like the finish on the unit from Precision Parts and Remanufacturing Co. I had to go through a dealer and then they will drop ship it to me.

Lifetime warranty on these units according to the dealer.

Sorry I didn't see this before ... IMO No, no reason other than originality to have the Lucas rebuilt rather than going with a conversion.

Thanks for the rebuilder link, Paul.

Does anyone have the Bosch part number for the "Fiesta" unit? Thanks. Mark

Here is the NAPA reman part number that I used on my 73 TR6.
BA 1860137. It was about $100. plus $5. core charge.

It bolted right up with the original spacers and same connector. It may or may not come with a pulley and the diameter of the pulley shaft is different than the original Lucas unit. My parts place put on a new pulley at N/C since their picture on their computer showed a pulley.
