TR2/3/3A TR3 Turn Signal Auto Cut-Off

The auto cut-off feature on my TR3 turn signal does not work most of the time. It never works when turning right and sometimes works when turning left, if the turn is sharp enough.

A while back, the whole horn / turn signal assembly was loose and was turning with the steering wheel. Although I repositioned and secured the assembly by tightening the gland nut at the front end of the sterring column, I think something might be out of position.

I am hesitant to loosen it up, becasue everything basically works and it is not that hard to flip the indicator off, but I feel this should be a pretty easy fix. One thought is that when the assembly was free to turn, it got rotated by a full 360 degrees which may be why the cut-off works in one direction and not the other.

I am not real familiar with what is inside this assembly, so I am not sure what to do. Any advice?

New turn signal stalk time. Maybe you can repair the turner offer thing (I don't know what you call it) inside. I have done it on american cars.

Aloha Bryan,

I have noticed on my TR3 that in order for the auto canceling to work, the turn needs to be very Sharp. That is a 90 degree turn on a two lane road. Sweeping turns on four lane boulevards will not cancel the signal.

In addition to the gland nut on the steering box, another thing to check is the three grub screws on the steering wheel. They hold a rotating disk in the control head to the steering wheel. The rotation of the disco trips the canceling mechanism. If you suspect the disk is not seated, back out the grub screws loosen the gland nut and push the control head into the steering wheel. The gap between the control head and the steering wheel is about 1/16 of an inch when everything is in place.

Here is a link that contains an excellent article on disassembling the control head.

https://www.tr-register.com.au/files/technical.htm

It should be very help if you decide to get further into it, but if not you can get a good idea of how it works.

Good Luck.

Safety Fast,
Dave

Dave is rigt on. The disc needs to be held into the hub by the grub screws, in the right position. Also It's common for the little spring loaded fingers that the tab on the disc trips tend to get really gunkey over the years. a dissasembly and cleaning usually fixes this, and then you can check the disc out as well.

After I had mine all apart, it would only cancel when I was turning left and never when I was turning right. I had to click it off by hand - when I remembered. So I took it apart and discovered that it was not centered. The chromed lever arm should be located in the central gap or space between the two "things" that are pointed or tapered upwards. I put it in the center and now it works fine.

Great link, Dave. This will be real helpful when I decide to take a look at it. This is one of those things that I don't see doing unless there is another reason to tear into the steering. I am famous for fixing one problem, and creating 2 others!

Also, there is a lot of "play" in my steering and I think in the not too distant future I will be considering one of those Rack and Pinion upgrades, so the turn signal will at least be addressed at that time.

Thanks to everyone for your input.
