Tach cable lube

My new tach cable should be here for Weds or Thursday. I'm not sure what lube will be on it, but what do you guys use? Now js the time to change it if need be.

I have my own thoughts, but wanted to see what the latest consensus out there was, especially for cold weather use, which will differ from the warmer states.

In one word, graphite.

In another word, grease.

You'll get differing opinions on this. The local guy who has a shop that does nothing but old speedos and tachs says just pull out the inner cable, get a wad of grease in your hand and drag the cable through it.

I would definitely avoid any light weight oil lest it migrates into the head where there are working bits (the drag cup) that would be affected by extra lube in there.

And other sources would explicitly state the same problems with excess grease. Years ago, when I had a GT6 tachometer rebuilt by Nisonger, there was a slip of paper included referring to excess grease being the cause of the problems necessitating the rebuild. (Hey, I bought the car used, so it wasn't my fault! )

So go very gently on grease as well, should you choose that for a lubricant!

Having done hundreds in my day with good old white lithium grease, I've seen (and caused!) the effects of too much of a good thing.

OK, so now which grease?

I was originally thinking about graphite, but I'm wondering if a light coat of the Mobil Synthetic Multi purpose (the red one for chassis, wheel bearings, etc.)
