TR4/4A SuperPro Front Spring Packing

I’m trying to install the front springs on my 4A using the SuperPro polyurethane packing pieces, however they’re too small to fit easily over the spring locating horns.

First I tried lining them up as best I could, hoping the spring would seat them correctly. No such luck, they caught on one edge or the other of the horn and deformed significantly.

Next I tried pre-fitting them to the lower spring pan by pressing down on the raised inner flange of the packing pieces. I was able to force them correctly into place this way, but they slip off as soon as the pressure is removed.

I thought about applying some heat when they were fitted as above, but didn’t think it would do any good since the material is a thermoset polyurethane.

I also thought about trying to glue them in place before installing the spring, but decided to try to tap into the collective wisdom of everyone here before making a mess I’d regret.

I did search the forum but didn’t find anything about my specific problem, but surely someone has already fought this battle.

Any thoughts or solutions would be greatly appreciated,

Jim

How about returning them and getting some that fit?

Not a bad idea except that I've got a rubber set from a different source that's the same size. From that I assumed that this is how they're made now. In fact, I bought the SuperPro's thinking they'd fit correctly. Hah!

I do have an older set I got from TRF many years ago that do fit correctly, but I used those in the rear.

But, it's certainly worth contacting TRF to see if they have something different.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,
I was just helping a friend with his TR6 and noticed that the rear springs are a smaller diameter than the front springs. With that in mind could have you be holding a set of packing pieces intended to fit the TR6 ( and maybe TR4A) rear springs?

Charley, excellent observation, you are correct.

I bought the SuperPro's a while ago and forgot what I had ordered them for. My poor memory was helped along by the fact that the package is labeled 'Poly Spring Coll FR T', which I took to mean front. However, the part number I have is listed on Moss' website for the rear while the front has a different part number.

I do recall trying them in the rear and didn't think they fit all that well in the trailing arm. It looked to me like the spring could wear into aluminum casting.

I requested the dimensions from TRF for the parts they sell. It'll be interesting to see how they compare.

Maybe I should keep a diary of all the 'doh' moments I have as I put my car back together. It could be humorous, though it might be just a little too humbling:eek:

Once again clearer minds prevail.

Thanks everyone,

Jim

According to the parts books, 4A front takes the same ones as TR3 (100751). Both the rubber and poly ones I've gotten from TRF fit my TR3 just fine.

I put Super Pros on my TR3 and they fit without any concerns. I also had some problems pressing in the A arm bushings in and found some help on YouTube.

Bringing up a thread WAY from the past. But...I'm putting in my springs on my TR4 and am having the same issues as the OP had. I bought the TRF Magic Suspension Kit with polyurethane bushings. The ONLY top bushing that doesn't fit is the one that goes on top of the spacer and spring/spacer locating horn. Ugh. If it's not one thing it's another. Anyone else had issues with the Magic Suspension Kits from TRF?
