Starter Pull

Is it possible to disassemble and clean the inside of the Bugeye starter pull ("solenoid").
Mine is making poor intermittent contact when I pull it.
I think there is dirt and/or corrosion in there...

That's one I think you'd be hard pressed to reassemble. As I recall, it has a rolled edge all the way around. Given how hard it is to bend that metal back and have the assembly really snug, which it need to be with that much current running through it, I think you'd have to be really lucky for it to still be viable. You could always chance it if you're ready to accept you have a good chance you'll have to buy a new one.

Are the repros any good? Or should I look for an original?

I may try to take it off and hit it good with WD-40

I've taken one apart to try to fix it, but it quickly became obvious that it didn't make much sense. The contacts were very worn and some of the small internal pieces couldn't be reused. I think a new one was about $15, so it's a cheap replacement.

I suppose if the WD40 doesn't perform magic on it, then I'll have to order a repro. I prefer rehabbing the original parts if possible.

Yep, checked and cleaned all accessible contacts and grounds. The issue seems to be the contacts internal to the pull starter/solenoid (what is this thing actually called?).

Fred,

NOS Locators has the solenoid you are looking for on E-Bay at $19.95. NFI. Time is money.
