Sourcing a correct engine for a '71 XKE

Let's assume for a moment that I needed the correct 6 cylinder engine for a '71 XKE, and that I was oblivious to the financial and mental brain damage that goes along with why the XKE didn't have a Jaguar engine in it in the first place. (Yes, I know that makes me dumb as a rock).

How hard and, ballpark, how expensive would it be to track one down? Assuming that a fully health one doesn't fall from the sky, any idea on rough rebuild costs.

Thanks!

Hi Don. Well it seems, to me anyway, that if you are going to take the V8 out it should really be to out the right thing back in. I'm not steeped in what the XKE market tolerates so if the same engine design over a broader number of years is ok that helps.

In the Jag market, as in a lot of restored car markets, "matching numbers" is fairly critical.
One step down is "proper type" engine.
If you have a V-8 in it, and did a bow-tie, hopefully you didn't weld on the frame. They (the frame) don't tolerate that, and you may have to replace that, too.
Proper inline, correct valve covers (not XJ-6 black finned), correct carbs and numbers of carbs.
If you're not going for points, it will work.
Expense?
Rebuilding one ain't cheap.
Finding one isn't, either.

Now, if you'd done the XK-F conversion from what, from 35-40 years ago, you'd have had NO welding on the frame cage, a nice 289, designed to swap in and out with the original engine you kept when you did the conversion.

Thanks Dave. Doing some more digging around I came up with an easy 20k to get a right (not numbers matching but period correct) drivetrain back in. Yikes!

20K is light. Cheaper to sell this one and buy another car.

Semi-amusing note: a guy, who used to live down the street from my Dad's house in Redmond, WA; had an XKE in which beat the living heart of . . . a Rambler inline-6. It was still beautiful, though!

No worse than the clapped out IH pickup with a Jag six under the bonnet at a car show many years ago....
Redmond, huh?
Used to live there, many years ago...Union Hill....

Okay. First off, what specific engine is IN it?
If it's a belly button, pass.
(350 General Misunderstanding....everybody has one).
If it's a Ford, what displacement?
Guy is going to tell you how much work went into the conversion, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Makes no difference.
It's worth less than half an original.

Next questions:
Does he have the original bits in the garage?
Are they included?
Have you looked at the car?
Are the motor mounts welded to the subframe cage?

The XK-F conversions were designed by a Boeing engineer, used dogbone looking things with rubber inside that bolted around the subframe cage.
I have the OLD Peterson book that shows it all.

The market of the jaguar is being very selective, it is difficult to find sometimes parts which miss us; what is your case here, and I hope thatit will go for you because Jag deserves it

So...what engine was in it, how much, and was it welded to the front subframe?
