I know I've seen it on here before, but can't seem to find it, so if anyone wants to visit this again....

79 Midget, I am painting and want to make the rubber bumpers look a little better. Is there a product out there to clean up rubber bumpers?

used car reconditioners use the shoepolish that comes in a bottle with the little cotton head brush in it.

I just use semi-gloss spray paint in a can.

Tony, do you sand first and use any primer? And does it crack easy?

I sand lightly & just spray...here's a set of bumppers that've been painted that way since 1993:

No cracks, fading, or any other issues...just looked & its "Satin Finish".

you can also buy bumper paint - I'm sure someone sells a satin I know that you can get colour match for newer cars - I presume the paint is more flexible

rubber bumpers really don't flex all that much. But they are a heavy plastic and not really rubber. Give 'em the krylon touch I'd wash them really good (to get off all the protectants/silicone sprays that have surely been put on them over the years) and then a light sanding before painting. That's how I'm gonna do mine.

Just a thought, you might want to paint the bumpers when you paint the rest of the car. If you shoot them, the bullet holes will be hard to fill and there might be a ricochet (sp?) that could put your eye out! :laugh:

The actual bumper paint from any auto parts store works great. Just make sure to use a good wax and grease remover to prep the surface first.

Or, If taking it back to original is not an issue, ever think of painting the bumpers to match the car? They look great and give the car a whole new look.

First time I saw a RB MGB with matching bumpers it was white and the first thought was: "Why th' heck didn't Leyland do that inna FIRST place?!?!"

I think it makes a RB car look "complete".

I agree with you Doc. I saw one at a show once and was amazed at how much the overall appearance changed. The car was a midnight blue, gorgeous! It stood out among all the other RBs. If I had kept the 79, it was getting that treatment.

just read a history of MGB's and they actually did consider it - not so much body colour as a contrasting colour as part of a 2 tone car - cost decided black as was typical of BL in those final days.

Gents,
I was most interested in this discussion in light of my plans to restore the white rubber bumpers on my 63 Herald. They will need more than a good cleaning and painting however. Any suggestions as to what to use to fill in the cracks, dings, and dents on these bumpers? If there is such a product, it will have to be sandable and somewhat flexible post painting so that I can get them back on the car without ruining the repair. Thanks.
