Recommendation on coil spring compressor

For which car ?

For TR2-6, there is a specific design of compressor required. Doesn't matter nearly so much who you buy from, as getting the right design. (I made my own from hardware store stuff & a pulley half from the junk bin.)

But Spits, etc. are likely different.

for TR2-6, get the type Moss sells. Either buy thiers, one just like it, or study the picture and fabricate one. (plate steel and threaded rod) It's gotta reach down through the center. anything that clamps onto the outside dosen't work.
The way the frame wraps around part of the spring (especially at the top) any attempt to hook up an outside type one causes the spring to compress in an arc, and then it's durn near impossible to re-fit.

I was hoping that I could find one that would also work for the TR8, but now that I understand that the suspension design is different I'll order the Moss one and get conventional one as well.

Still cheaper than bringing it to a garage.

Thanks guys

I recently made one to use on tr6. I used 5/8 X 24" heat treated all thread rod, misc. flat washers, castle nut for top w/cotter pin,3/4 X 3 galv. nipple for spacer & 3" X 5"X 1/2 steel plate. I drilled 3/4" hole in center of plate. Also drilled 2 holes 5/16 dia. slightly within inside dia. of spring to keep it centered. I used it to remove & replace springs.Worked great. total cost $15 vs $60?

Probably obvious I forgot to mention other 5/8 nuts . I used one nut under spacer w/washer and double nutted bottom end of rod. this let me use bottom end as driver by holding single nut next to spacer. Also add some grease on shaft.

Another source to consider is "loan a tool' program from national parts dealers, Advance and AutoZone. My local Autozone had a style that came down through the center. It was about too big, but did work.
