Radiator/coolant leak

My radiator has a small coolant leak and the water pump is leaking from the pulley post. Am going to repair and replace, respectively. To remove radeator, Haynes manual says to "2. Remove the filler plug from the coolant outlet pipe." No picture or diagram. I give up!...what and where is this thing? I have a '72 MGB, GHN5..., 18v engine with an overflow tank. Any ideas?....Thanks.

There isn't a filler plug on the coolant outlet pipe for a 72 B. There is a filler plug on the thermo housing on late model MGBs.

Remove the clamps and the top/bottom hoses. Undo the bolts holding the rad to the surround. Pull it out. Easy as pie. Might as well replace the thermostat and gasket while you have it all apart. And maybe the heater hoses. And check the heater valve. And...

Hmmm, a 72 with a overflow tank. Not a bad idea, but not original, unless I've missed something in the past. Unhook the bottom hose to drain the system. Pull the fan off. Pull the top hose off and undo the rad bolts. Pull it out. Nothing to it! If you need more clearance to pull the fan, undo the outer diaphram bolts on the inter fender wells and rock the whole unit forward. If you don't have an oil cooler, you can take the whole thing out that way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif PJ

OOps I do have an oil cooler. I assume that will have to go first before I "can take the whole thing out that way"? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Removing a '72 MGB radiator:

1. Remove lower radiator hose & allow fluid to drain.
2. Remove upper radiator hose.
3. Remove 3 bolts on each side of radiator.
4. Remove radiator.

since you have a later overflow tank, somewhere alon the way you'll have to remove the hose from it to the radiator

...&, that's it!

Then curse and unbend the diagonal support brackets you just bent trying to remove the radiator in 4 steps instead of 5 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
