Project car, beware of parts

Anyone who is working on a long term project or a fix to a car that may take more then 30 days after receiving the parts. You need to think about this before you order parts.

I ordered what I thought was a clutch for a 70 GT6. It came and said on the packing slip 3 piece clutch kit 65-70 and the numbers on the part matched the box. I guess the 65 should have thrown up a flag to me being that the GT at the earliest was 67 if I remember.

Well, needless to say I sat on the part for a year and half because of an accident and also because the car was in storage.

The other day I go to take the transmission out and put in the clutch and when I pull the sleeve off the box it says 1300 spitfire/ herald. This label was under the sleeve. So now I look further and and find that what I get is a spitfire 1300 clutch not one for a GT6. I call to see if I can return it but because it is over 30 days it is not returnable. Spitbits is sorry they can't help and at this point it is my issue not theirs. I should have checked the part sooner.

So what am I trying to say. If you order parts don't take for granted that it is the correct part. Check the part out completely. The label may be wrong or misleading. Don't order parts until you plan to use them and if you do find that you have a wrong part or the part is bad make sure you have the receipt (this may not do you any good).

I am not sure how you guys do it when restoring a car. I think most of you have ordered parts and found out later that the wrong one was shipped. I guess I learned the hard way that you just eat it.

I use to be a firm believer in Spitbits and ordered everything from them but I now have to think about who I want to do business with. I guess I know now to make sure to never trust the parts vendors. They never make a mistake and if they do you better catch it right away. It is you who made the mistake for not checking out the part 100% when you received it.

So I hope you guys will at least get some wisdom from my mistake. Check your parts and make sure they are correct and make sure you plan on using the parts right away.

I have never had any business with Spitbits, but a 30 day no return is pretty much standard across all business's. I would suggest you post the clutch kit on ebay or here in the classifieds.

Best of Luck Tom

Tom- In my book any supplier that is reputable and gets repeat business should stand behind the problem. Afterall, the part is new and unused. Surely they could have solved the problem by supplying the right part and even charging you the difference if the price had gone up since the time you purchased the inncorrect one. Good customer service goes a LONG WAY.
Today it is easier to keep a customer than get a new one... foolish, very foolish.

I think someone that is a long time customer should get some consideration on the return. A 25% restocking charge may be in line though after that long.
