Orange peel question

OK, I am getting down to the nitty gritty. I got a few places that I would like to polish out on the clear coat. I wet sanded the clear coat on the fender that had bad orange peel and it is smooth now, and I bought a new high speed polisher from harbor freight. It came with a soft wool pad. What type of polish or whatever should I use with this? I am stopping by wal-mart later today to get a new battery and I can pick something up if they have what I need.

IMO, Throw away the cheap wool pad. Get a foam pad with a "one step" cut and polish compound. These newer compounds start course and break down as they are used. They are also easier to clean up than traditional compounds.

If that wool pad is held on with elastic, then definitely toss it in the bin.

Kim, go to an auto paint store and get the right pad and buffing compound. You will be very pleased with the results.

I've heard good things about the McGuire's system but I haven't used it. I have used various products from 3M with good results. I have used their multi-component "Perfect-It" system and where I've wanted a single step polish I've had good luck with "Finesse-It".

I have had good initial polishing results with lamb's wool bonnets but as others said above, when you're down to the final buffing, the foam pads give excellent results.

I'd be careful with the HF polisher. If it's not orbital, I wouldn't consider using it as you're likely to create swirl marks.

I agree with Doug, "Finesse-it" is a good product...does a great job on most everything I have used it on!
