I started fixing up carbs for the new manifold last night. I'm working on a pair that were on my car for several years and I just couldn't get them tuned in properly.
Tonight I disassembled and cleaned one. I found the bypass valve diaphragm has a large hole in it. But I also found that some DPO had forced the throttle butterfly into the the carb body enough that it put small gouges near each side of the throttle shaft. This didn't allow the disc to seat properly. If it doesn't fit, force it. They never cease to amaze me.
I think it might work now.

I've been amazed at some little PO surprises myself. But I have to keep in mind that many of these wonderful cars have been around quite a while. When a car is only five or six years old, the owner may just want a quick fix, or may let his next-door buddy work on it over a few beers, or take it to the local gas station just to get it running again.

Now of course I'd never do those things on my 50 year old TeeYah mind you. But I have to admit I've looked for quick fixes on my 3 year old Mazda.

Before buying TeeYah, I asked the owner "Any rust under those glued-down carpets?". Answer: "not a bit". Reality:

Now THAT's funny Tom!! But I think I've got you beat on
the glued down carpet trick. My Pedro-ized floor was a tad
worse off than yours, I believe.

To paraphrase a famous theme song:

"Let's ride with the family down the street,
through the courtesy of Dale's two feet!"
