I took a 64' non overdrive gearbox with bad sycros and a 66' overdrive gearbox with bad gears and made one good OD gearbox. I used the OD and the mainshaft from the 66' and pretty much everything else for the 64' gearbox. Installed new Moss sycros and gaskets. Also rebuilt the OD. The bearings seemed fine, but the front bearing may have had some play, but didn't seem too bad. New clutch also.

The problem: I have a "rubby"/ "winey" sound (when cold) when I push in the clutch pedal. It goes away when the clutch is left out either in or out of gear. When it warms up it goes away. I think it is the pilot bushing? I didn't grease it and really didn't look at it carefully when apart.

The other thing is that the third gear sycro doesn't function? Could these be related? I know that later years require different sycros, but 64' and 66' should be the same? All the other sycros work fine.

Any ideas before I pull everything back apart? Thank you

Hard to say, and I'm not expert, but you should have soaked the pilot bushing in oil for a few hours before assembly. The clutch works independent from the rest of the gearbox so I doubt the two are related. Does the clutch work properly otherwise?

When the clutch is released the gearbox input shaft and laygear are rotating. Noise can be from about anything in the box... Input shaft bearing,laygear bearings, etc. I doubt it's the pilot bush from description.

Actually when you push in the clutch the first motion shaft stops moving and the flywheel (pilot bush) are. This is when I have the noise. Thats why I think its the pilot bush.

Yes, that's what I meant by "Released"... clutch pedal out. As in "applied" or "released". But did misread/misinterpret the noise "actuator". Sorry.

T/O bearing or shaft bushing, yes. I've seen some clutch driven plates make 'funny' noises, too, right out of the box. Poorly set rivets, out of spec springs.

Bit surprised at the third gear non-engaging as that's usually the last to give problems. If fourth works properly it almost has to be the ring.
